No free insurance
So far nobody has bought any Basic Camp Sets fashioned by Kagy... I'm not quite sure why that is, other than maybe because only scouts use camps and a scout can usually build his own. But they're not fashioned by Kagy, but that apparently hasn't caught on like I thought it would. I did find another town on Tatooine ("find" being a bit strong -- I just walked to it following a map). I forget what it was called, but I managed to complete a couple missions for some random folks there, so it was something. Lots of walking though... wouldn't mind getting me a beast like the Tuskan Raiders ride around on. I hear that's coming soon with an update from the Sony folks. That's really about it... oh yeah, I did visit a cantina and sure enough, three "girls" were inside dancing their little hearts out, working for tips. My man Kagy paid no attention... or at least paid no tips. They can really put their groove on in this game... it's funny to watch. Still working my way up through the ranks of a Scout... I'm nearing the point where I'll have completed one level of wilderness exploration. I think one more good campsite should do it. Not sure what happens then... Maybe I get access to the Intermediate Camp Set which includes two lawn chairs...
Blasters set to kill
Luckily I remembered to equip my blaster before attacking my first woort... I tried to do the right thing -- I went prone, targeted my woort, and started blasting away. It didn't take him very long to run up right in front of me, at which point SWG told me that I couldn't shoot the woort while prone (he was too close). He got a few free hits on me while I stood up, but then I unleashed my Bothan Scout fury... pummelling him over the span of a minute with potshots from my standard issue (aka weak) blaster. I think one time my shot bounced off his head and hit me (not really). I managed to kill my worthy enemy, so I immediately looted the corpse which turned up nothing (no surprise). I think dipped into my bag of Scout tricks and gathered resources from his body... I had the choice of woort meat (yuck), his hide, or his bones. Not knowing anything, I chose his bones. For my next enemy I decided to try out my other Scout trick -- traps. During my training in the tutorial, I was issued a set of dart traps that are supposed to weaken an enemy. I assigned a hotkey to my trap, targeted the closest enemy woort, and hit my F key. My man Kagy proceeded to lob a trap at the enemy... and it hit! I have no idea what it did other than piss off the woort, and he came running at me. I, of course, whipped out my blaster and started shooting, and in a matter of minutes had a leathery hide to go along with my set of woort bones. I did this a few more times, then decided to figure out what I did with all these stinky hides and bones I was lugging around. I went back into town and fired up a Bazaar Terminal and perused the active auctions. In Star Wars Galaxies, you can easily sell stuff using these terminals that are setup kind of like eBay... you can either use it as an auction, or setup set prices that people can pay. I found some leathery hides and bones for sale, but then I realized that as a Scout, I had a crafting kit. I fired it up and lo and behold, I could make camping kits (like I used before) from... leathery hides and bones! Perfect! I had all the makings of a basic camp set... My first camping kit turned out perfectly -- so good, in fact, that I had a durability bonus of +2. I saved this one for my own use (everytime I camp I need a camping kit), and built two more from my collection of materials. One turned just "ok", and the other turned out perfect again. I logged into the Bazaar Terminal again and set up one auction and one set price sale for my camping kits. Actually, I changed the name to 'Basic Camping Kit fashioned by Kagy' so people could find it easily and start to recognize my name as the leader in camping kits. I'm hoping to log back in tonight and have a little extra cash in the bank thanks to my auctions... I priced my fixed-price camping kit just below the others in the area... yep, my man Kagy did a little market research. That pretty much wraps up my first night in the Star Wars Universe... I'm hoping to take a few screenshots tonight -- I'll definitely get one of my man Kagy in his camp. Hopefully I'll get some visitors, as well... gotta start working my way up the skill tree. More later!
Camping
After customizing the heck out of my man Kagy, I chose 'Scout' as my initial profession... after reading up on the different skills you start with, it seemed like the scout was a nice starting point with a good blend of action and crafting. I ran through the in-game tutorial (pretty quick and somewhat helpful), and finally chose my starting point as, of course, Tatooine. I had the choice of Naboo, Corellia, and some other places, but please... A New Hope started around Tatooine and so should I. I dropped into Tatooine (not like a PlanetSide drop, I just kind of appeared), and stood there for a bit in Mon Ethma (sp) trying to figure out what the hell to do. It was early in the morning, so a bit dark out, but I saw a good number of folks running around, doing whatever they were doing. I wasn't really sure where to start, so I started running around the ciy I was in, trying the different interfaces, etc... The surroundings are pretty cool -- every now and then you'll hear the screem of a tie fighter or shuttle in the air and if you look fast enough, you'll see a silhouette flying by. My man Kagy looks quite fetching in his scouting vest and cargo pants, and all the other folks running around look pretty unique as well. In my wanderings, I happened upon a noble who I started conversing with. She asked me to fetch a demo tape of a horrible singer (she was a music producer) and deliver it back to him with the bad news. For that, she said, she'd pay me handsomely, especially if it got me away from her quickly. Choosing not to take offense (I mean really... who couldn't love a Bothan like me?), I accepted the mission and found a new waypoint on my radar. Luckily the waypoint was in the city, so within 10 minutes I had talked with two people, delivered the tape, and found an extra 100 credits in my bank account. "Easy enough... let's go find a real mission", I said to my man Kagy. He looked at me in agreement, but only because I pushed that 'emote' icon. There are tons of emotions, gestures, and moods you can have your character do. Pretty funny waching some conversations. And the system picks up on certain words... I typed "hah" once and my man Kagy started laughing. Funny. Anyhow, I went to a mission terminal and found what looked like a simple exploring mission -- go to a waypoint and check-in with someone about some droids that were found. And it paid 800 credits! Looked good -- sign me up. Unfortunately, the waypoint was really freakin' far away... I started walking towards it on my map around inning four of the diamondbacks game... it wasn't until inning seven that I got 500 meters away from my destination. At which point a message appeared saying "Time expired, mission not accomplished." Pardon? Are you kidding me? I was literally out in the middle of the Tatooine desert, avoiding these huge creatures that kept trying to ram me, and my time expired? Maybe I was supposed to take a shuttle or something, but I freakin' ran the whole way, up the mountains, and down the mountains. And my time expired. Bummer! So with me losing my mission and the diamondbacks losing the game, I turned around, pointed myself back to the city, and put my man Kagy on auto-run. I went downstairs and got me a glass of water and some peanut butter and crackers. This scouting's tough work, you know... As I was running back, some big lug of an animal decided to attack me... hit me so hard I couldn't run away, and within a minute I was incapacitated on a hill in the Tatooine desert. Three suns beat down on my unconscious body, but at least the beasts let me be and walked away (they didn't deliver a death blow). After a 90 second penalty, I slowly woke up and my man Kagy stood up and started running for home again. He's a good man, that Bothan. Then the Tuskan Raiders noticed me and decided to start taking potshots at me. After a few hits, I was another notch on a Tuskan Sniper's gun. As a lay on the ground incapacitated (again), three Tuskans and two of their mounts (just like the movie) walked up to me. This time, though, one of the Tuskans delivered the death blow, and I was officially dead. And just to add insult to injury... all three Tuskans literally cheered my death and did a little dance over my body. It was awesome. Plus it was a free ride home! I was uncloned and warned I only had two more deaths before my free newbie insurance wore off... good to know. After that miserable mission, I decided to check out the outskirts of town and see what exactly a scout could do. I had a basic camping kit (as a scout I'm supposed to be able to survive in the wilderness), so I popped it open and all of a suddent I had a kick ass camp, complete with a cot, a tent, a lawn chair, a fire, and two tiki torches. Camp Kagy was open for business! A camp in the wilderness is a place for people to gather and get healed... it adds some bonus modifiers to any healers or dancers if they're in the camp. As the person who created the camp, I get experience points for each person who visits, as well as for how much healing took place. The camp isn't permanent, you can disband it or after a bit of time it will go away on its own, so the best idea is pop one open for a bunch of people and let it sit for a while. I sat down on my lawn chair (really, I did -- I even took a screenshot but I can't find it), and waited for the hordes of people to visit Camp Kagy. I only had five visitors by the time my camp disbanded on its own. But for those five visitors, I got 360+ wilderness experience points, which isn't too bad for not doing much. The best time was when a healer stood in the middle of my camp waiting for anyone who needed healing. Unfortunately nobody needed healing (apparently I was on the wrong side of town because it wasn't too busy), so she got bored and left. So that was my first scouting experience... but there was more to come! I'm off to work, so stay tuned for my lunchtime report on how I killed my first womp rat and what I did with his bones... It is done
