    What Snow?
    blog

    I'm not sure what people were talking about when we moved up to Bozeman... it's been beautiful weather and it's almost november! Where's the snow?

    Sure, we had one day where it stuck on the ground... the dogs loved it, even ember (our greyhound who is just skin and bones) had a ball running around in it. But then it melted away, and so did the fun.

    Speaking of loss of fun, The West Wing, at one time the best show on TV (in my opinion), has crumbled into a dark, gloomy, sad excuse for 44 minutes of "entertainment". This week's episode, "Han", had a stank on it worse then Ember, who, along with just being skin and bones, doesn't control her bladder very well at night. The show sucked... the worst part being that lame-ass attempt at humor by substituting in Will and Toby's fake speech for the actual speech.

    Please... that's amateur. I could've written that and I'm less than amateur. What's happening to my beloved show? I'll tell ya... the mushroom-loving writer is long gone and the new team doesn't measure up. Sad.

    I bought my first album using the new windows version of iTunes... pretty cool little app, nice interface, especially since it's essentially free (for the app). The store itself seems to have a nice selection, although I'm a but undecided on the $.99 per song ($9.99 for most albums). That still seems a bit expensive, especially since I'm doing most of the work (downloading, burning, labelling, etc...). Maybe $.50 per song and $7.99 per album...

    It has spurred my interest in getting an iPod, though... Apple's 40gb iPod looks pretty tempting. The extra 20gb would be nice (over my current player), but the best part is the firewire/usb 2.0 interface and the auto-sync that happens with iTunes. Good stuff.

    Servers, servers, servers...
    blog :: linux

    Yes, folks, the wait is over... the haslup NOC is back online, serving up weather and ping times to all you folks who are bored to death.

    So, just for review: here's the weather page, and here is my ping page. Someday I'll put up some photos, as well, but in the meantime, enjoy the graphs.

    In other news, the big server swap-out is complete... I name all my machines after our dogs, so here's the rundown:

    • Tess: my main machine, RedHat 9, enlightenment window manager, receives weather data (for now), 1.8ghz P4, 640mb.
    • Rupert: WinXP gaming box, 2.6ghz P4, 1gb, does a good job on most games.
    • Buster: The work horse... athlon 850 box that I built (amazed it's still running), RedHat 9, no X. It's the database, web, and file server. It's actually located in our crawlspace, next to our tivos which I also have down there. It keeps 'em nice and cool... wheck the 'wine' temp on the weather page.
    • Ember: 900mhz celeron, no AGP, it's my poke-around-on box. Currently boots off of a linux media CD with a TV-out connection to the upstairs TV and streams in tv shows from buster.
    • Gretta: 750mhz p3 laptop, usually located in the kitchen, dual boots Win98 (!) and RedHat 8 (ratpoison windowmanger, lean and mean).

    So, that's five dogs, and five machines... if I want a new machine that means we get a new dog. I think I'm good with five.
