No swap, gmane, and perfection
Not all three are related, but just a peak into this update. First off, the perfect game thrown by Randy Johnson was very cool to watch. Good for him... I just hope he stays with the diamondbacks... The next cool item of the day: gmane is a free setup that hosts a mailing list -> nntp (news) gateway. They've basically subscribed to a good number of mailing lists so you don't have to and provide them via nntp so you can read them with your favorite newsreader (emacs/gnus, of course). Plus, it keeps an archive of all the lists and the articles never expire. So you're free to search using their web site, or even grab the whole group in your reader if you feel so inclined. I like it because there are some mailing lists (linux kernel mailing list, for example) that I'd like to check in on every now and then but have too much traffic for me to bother with. More linux fun: I think I've done a first for me and linux (other than on my PDA): I'm running without a swap partition. Ahh, yes, I'm too crazy for my own good. Here's the thing: whenever I'd get home after work, I'd go upstairs and check my email. Now, since I use my home machine from work, all my desktop applications would have swapped out sometime during the day, so there'd be an annoying perioed of time where my desktop gets swapped back in. Since I have 640MB in that box and /proc told me I wasn't using more than 425MB between physical memory and my swap, I decided to swapoff and see how things go. After a few days -- perfect! Everything's zippy, and I've never taken my memory usage above 500MB. I like it. Really don't have much more than that... other than Bozeman's great, of course. Woke up the other morning to a nice little snowfall... drove the convertible the next day. Love it here! Mon, 03 May 2004
The Definition of "Closer"
I think the Diamondbacks should consult a baseball terms dictionary on how to use the word "closer" in regards to a pitcher. I've actually done the work for them, according to this baseball dictionary, a closer is: I don't believe this works for Matt Mantei, who, up through Sunday's debacle of a game, has blown three saves and has given up five ninth-inning home runs. Time to try something new, I think...
