Hello Phoenix
Wow, it's been way too long since I've posted here. Shame on me. Good excuse though... we've moved to phoenix! That's right... we've left beautiful Bozeman, MT to come back to big ol' Phoenix, AZ. We're pretty happy with the move and are excited to get our new life going here... again. I think we'll stay longer than we did the last time we were living in phoenix, but who knows with us! I've started a new job and have been working for a full two weeks already. I'm going to avoid typing where I work in my blog as much as I can since if I do mention the name, I have to put a disclaimer at the end of the post. There is actually a blogging policy here which I think is cool... it's not anymore restrictive than any limits I've placed on myself. It's a little something called common sense... Lots to write about the new job... I'm still doing linux development, but it's a lot different than what I was doing before. So far I really like it... I do miss one thing from my old job: my linux workstation. Ahh... the memories... I loved the fact that I was on linux 99% of the day at my old job. Oh well. I'm back on windows xp... sort of. Being the dork that I am, I've spent some time configuring my winxp workstation to be more like linux and less like windows. I haven't gone to the extreme by replacing system components, I've mainly just been adding applications. For example, cygwin + X11 for cygwin. I'm actually pretty impressed with how well X11 is running... I use xterms now instead of cmd prompts, and even though I have the native windows build of emacs, I prefer the cygwin + X11 version. I should actually document everything I've done... maybe next week. What else... oh, one problem I'm having which I haven't been able to solve: using the win32 mysql client in an xterm or via emacs. It will only work with cmd.exe because of some issue with cygwin's ptys... or the fact that windows doesn't have ptys. Kind of annoying... I miss the SQL buffer in emacs and my tree widget interface to tables. I'll still work at it, though, and find some sort of solution... Still got the old Zaurus up and running... a new version of the pdaxrom has come out and I think I'll upgrade to it this weekend. I haven't actually been using it as much as I used to the past couple days because... for Christmas I got an iPod with Video! Now this is a sweet little device, even with the whole iTunes + DRM thing. I've got some videos on it and it's really not too bad to watch a 20 minute TV show on. I also was able to hook it up to a TV and the video quality is pretty good... I'm sure on our HDTV it'll look crappy, but I don't plan on using it with that. I've got the 60gb version and so far have only used 11gb of it. I need to load up all my pictures and I've got some more videos, but it's gonna be tough filling this little guy up. Gotta run for now but stay tuned for many more updates... house-hutning, more on my job, and some of the stuff I've learned about surviving without linux at work :-) Archives 2010 : February (2) 2009 : February (2) 2008 : January (2) February (2) March (5) April (1) June (1) July (2) October (1) November (3) 2007 : January (3) February (1) March (1) June (2) December (1) 2006 : February (4) March (4) April (11) May (5) July (7) August (5) September (4) October (3) November (6) December (2) 2005 : January (1) February (6) April (2) May (4) June (3) July (8) August (5) September (3) October (3) November (1) December (1) 2004 : January (9) February (5) March (6) April (3) May (2) June (1) July (6) August (10) September (1) October (4) November (3) 2003 : March (6) April (3) May (1) June (18) July (9) August (4) September (5) October (2) November (7) December (2) |
