Canola
For all you Nokia 770 owners out there... Canola
is launching today sometime. Tue, 28 Nov 2006
Enjoyable Thread
I've been reading the python usenet group lately (I've been delving into Django) and came a cross a couple threads I enjoyed reading. Not sure why, but I always seem to like reading the threads looking for alternate ways of doing things. I guess I just like seeing the flexibility of languages and the creativity of developers. I'm also hoping as I read these things they'll stay in some dark corner of my brain so I can recall them at a later date. The threads are here and here.Mon, 13 Nov 2006
It's still Bloglines
I can't do it. I tried switching to Google Reader, but I can't. The interface is too slow and their mobile support, while it looks cool for a mobile phone, is not good for my Nokia 770. Bloglines has it all... a nice web interface and a much better mobile interface. Plus they just added some sort of 'playlist' functionality that I'll have to check out. I think the only way I'll try again is if when I search for something in Google (which I must do a lot!), any results in my feeds are displayed alongside the standard results. Now that would be cool. And throw in results from my Google Notebooks, as well. Please! That's all. Back to Bloglines.Thu, 09 Nov 2006
Canola
Well, this app for the Nokia 770 just looks awesome. I love the idea of turning the 770 into a portable music client. Now I just need the Nokia GPS kit (currently only available in Europe) which (I think) also has a car charger, and I'd have my car-puter. Wed, 08 Nov 2006
More on the Phone
This blog entry has more info on the OpenMoko distribution. Plus Mickey was kind enough to answer my question.
OpenMoko
Well, this looks pretty darn cool. It's an 'open' phone, built completely with open software which means if you want to change something, you can! I've always wanted to write some apps for my phone and hopefully someday I'll be able to. Stupid stuff... like turning on and off certain functions based on parameters like time of day and/or GPS location. For example, if I'm walking out of the office at 5:45pm I want my phone to know to switch to audible-ringer mode (off of vibrate which I keep it on at work). And I want it to know that if I open it up to dial a number I'm usually calling my wife to let her know I'm on the way home. And if it's Friday, I want it to also dial Pei Wei because it's Friday night and I usually bring that home for dinner. Other stuff... I want it to pull down pictures from my flickr account every now and then and set them as my background. If it's got GPS I want to track my daily drives to and from work just for the heck of it (see my previous posts on useless data I like to keep). When I'm at home (which it will know because of the GPS) I want to sync up my podcasts each night via Bluetooth. That sort of stuff. I think it'll all be possible with this phone since (I'm guessing) you get access to everything, not just simple app access. Plus the SDK will be based around the OpenEmbedded group which has done a great job with open distros for the Sharp Zaurus (and other PDAs). One of the main guys from OE is working on it which is great to see. My only worry is that the wireless carriers here in the US will never allow it on their networks. I can't see Verizon (my current carrier) every opening that up to me. How else would they make their $$ off of games and ringtones (both of which I never buy). Plus Verizon isn't GSM... if T-Mobile allows this phone I'll switch to them, I'll even pay the fee to drop Verizon early and T-Mobile will have two new customers (me and my mystique). That's it for now... keep an eye on OpenMoko!Archives 2010 : February (2) 2009 : February (2) 2008 : January (2) February (2) March (5) April (1) June (1) July (2) October (1) November (3) 2007 : January (3) February (1) March (1) June (2) December (1) 2006 : February (4) March (4) April (11) May (5) July (7) August (5) September (4) October (3) November (6) December (2) 2005 : January (1) February (6) April (2) May (4) June (3) July (8) August (5) September (3) October (3) November (1) December (1) 2004 : January (9) February (5) March (6) April (3) May (2) June (1) July (6) August (10) September (1) October (4) November (3) 2003 : March (6) April (3) May (1) June (18) July (9) August (4) September (5) October (2) November (7) December (2) |
