Pipes!
blog
Yahoo announced Pipes today. I'm having a hard time
logging into it -- I think it's more popular than they planned for. But from what I've
seen, it's pretty freaking cool.
It's basically a cool UI that allows you to slice, dice, join, peel, etc... data that's
available from all sorts of feeds. It's based on unix pipes, of course... where you can
pipe the output from one command into another, stringing together a whole series of commands
to get your data just the way you want it. I love it.
I'm sure I've written about this before, but... it reminds me of an old Mac application that
was being built as a community to teach each other how to write apps. It basically did the
same thing... it took inputs of text files and let you string together functions in a
graphical way that would munge that data. At the end of your pipes you'd have an output file
just the way you wanted it.
I loved that idea... I think over the past few years I always came back to that idea and wanted
to write a new version of it. Apparently I should have thought about making a version that worked
on RSS feeds :-) Yahoo did, and I can't wait to check it out. Add more servers, Yahoo!
Oh, and if you happen to remember the name of that Mac application, please let me know.
Every year or so I search around and can't find any mention of it. I might just need to fire up
an old Mac of mine and see if I still have it.
