VMware Fusion Tips
As I mentioned before, I use VMware Fusion on my mac running a linux VM (Ubuntu) which I then use to VPN in to work. It's nice because it lets me continue to use my mac normally without having all my network traffic go through work. For the most part, on the linux VM I simply run tsclient (a nice rdesktop implementation) to my Windows XP machine at work. This lets me keep the same session going at work... I can hop back into my emacs session to do email, look through tickets, etc... One problem I was having while do this, though, was that Fusion's latest update (1.1.1) added in a transparent mapping of some of the command-key combinations to their windows equivalent. For example, when I hit cmd-x my emacs session at work was seeing ctrl-x. Annoying because I use cmd-x a lot since I had mapped cmd to alt using the following in my Fusion preferences file:mks.keyboard.swapAlt = TRUE To make a long story short, there's an easy way to disable the freebie transparent mapping but you need to again update your preferences file. To stop that keyboard madness, just add: pref.mapMacShortcutKeys = "FALSE" to your preferences file and you're good to go. And if you're wondering where that preferences file is... check ~/Library/Preferences/VMware Fusion/preferences. Enjoy!Mon, 18 Feb 2008
Stil Mac'ing It
I'm writing this from my Mac now... got a nice emacs installed on it, brought over all my custome elisp, etc... Still loving the mac! Now that I'm not using it full-time, I installed MythTV on my linux server that's still situated in the closet. Pretty nice application... there's (of course) a client for the Mac that I'm using, and I also installed the client on my old laptop. I actually found a MythTV frontend for Nokia tables, but it didn't work on my N770 out of the box. Anyhow, back to MythTV... I'm just messing around with it for now, not sure if I'll keep using it or not. I set it up primarily because I didn't want to spend time in our attic trying to run another cable line to our office so I could watch TV directly on the Mac. Running cables down through insulation and into the walls just isn't as much fun as it used to be. Mystique won't let me run the wires across the living room floor, either, so what am I to do? Been playing around with JetS3t which is a java library and a couple of apps that provides easy access to your S3 account. I've been using it to backup a bunch of photos, documents, etc... It's dead-simple to use and includes a set of Java classes if you feel like writing something yourself. Ok, that's it for now... hopefully more soon!Archives 2010 : February (2) 2009 : February (2) 2008 : January (2) February (2) March (5) April (1) June (1) July (2) October (1) November (3) 2007 : January (3) February (1) March (1) June (2) December (1) 2006 : February (4) March (4) April (11) May (5) July (7) August (5) September (4) October (3) November (6) December (2) 2005 : January (1) February (6) April (2) May (4) June (3) July (8) August (5) September (3) October (3) November (1) December (1) 2004 : January (9) February (5) March (6) April (3) May (2) June (1) July (6) August (10) September (1) October (4) November (3) 2003 : March (6) April (3) May (1) June (18) July (9) August (4) September (5) October (2) November (7) December (2) |
